The 20 ms trap
A GIF stores each frame’s delay in hundredths of a second. To stop old banner ads from hogging the CPU, browsers treat very short delays (under about 20 ms) as 100 ms, so a GIF "sped up" too far actually plays slower. When a speed-up would cross that line, this tool merges neighbouring frames and gives the merged frame their combined time. The animation plays at the speed you chose in every browser.
Questions
How do I speed up a GIF?
Drop it in, pick a speed like 2× and press Make it. Every frame delay is divided by the speed, so the whole animation plays faster.
Why doesn’t my GIF get any faster past a certain point?
Browsers show GIF frames shorter than about 20 ms as 100 ms, which makes "too fast" GIFs play slowly. When a speed-up would go below 20 ms, this tool merges frames instead so the GIF really plays at the speed you chose.
Can I slow a GIF down?
Yes. Pick 0.5× or 0.25× to make each frame last longer.
